Chaos and Creation: Why the blog?
The purpose of this blog is to address an inadequacy in our history and our culture. To not know is dangerous. I do not lightly take on this endeavor; I am sure that my initial purpose and intent may be as a petty and defiant response to a national desire to ignore, erase, and vilify who I am, a Black American woman. Still, I have a plan, but do not expect me to adhere to it. Many of my posts will be in response to some current moment in our alarmingly racist political climate. And in doing so, I shall relate it to a moment in the African-American experience. Do, however, expect me to bring my truth, the truth as I have learned it and discovered it. While the intention is to be unbiased, I shall remain unapologetic.
It's not the noise of those who condemn my history and my culture that scares me. It's the quiet of those who don't understand and those who don't care that my history is being erased by the very ones who have erased countless peoples and cultures in the past. They bought chaos to the birthplace of my ancestors, stealing her people and raping her land. How ignorant they were to assume that chaos would not follow them for generations to come. When I realized that, I understood their fear better. It's not the fear of knowledge; it's the fear of power that comes with the knowledge. Power and chaos.
That. It's the chaos for me.
Chaos and Creation. Nothing can be created in a void or space empty of all things. The timing and conditions have to be right. No thing can exist outside of creation. Even duplication relies on the creation. So, it makes sense that creation began in Africa. You, my dear reader, began in Africa.
Waking is the beginning of something. Being woke is the beginning of everything. Depending on who is telling the story, being woke is dangerous. Either you possess too much information, or you possess too much information. Read those differently. One alerts you to the fact that you aren't able to process so much knowledge in one soul, and the other alerts others to the fact that you are able to make a fully informed judgement. Revolution pending.
Woke. And gloriously unapologetic about it. The fact that being woke unleashes an awakening should motivate you to wake up. Woke is defiance and exhilarating. As my shirt says, "I love my naps, but I stay woke." Wake and walk with me. Today is the first day of this journey. Time to create.
See you soon.
